How I Built My Freelance Writing Business (And Earned $500 in one month)

I had a dream of starting a freelance writing business.

But corporate work would not let me go.

Money after 30 days held me ransom.

Until I was let go.

I got fired in 2018 December.

No one believed in me.

But I believed in myself.

I started a business from a disadvantaged position.

And the business is growing.

Don't do what I did.

Prepare well.

I started freelancing in January 2019 and business picked up very quickly.

I’ve been freelance writing for over 4 years now.

During that time, I built a freelance writing business that brought in $500 plus per month. Last month, I earned $400 from freelance writing.

What Does Selling Look Like in the 21st Century

Lead Magnets & Mailing Lists

Many people believe that selling on the internet is a myth.

It is not a myth.

Selling on the internet is possible.

Not only is it possible, but it also eliminates the need for a brick-and-mortar office and cuts out much of the overhead costs that are needed to run an office.

It is a high trust business. Building trust takes time. Once the trust is built, the sky is the limit for you and your business.

From services to skills to products, I have been selling on the internet since 2008.

Becoming Financially Free - The Nigerian Dream

How to start Freelancing in Nigeria – Becoming Financially Free

One of the steps towards becoming financially free is making a decision. When you decide to be a freelancer, you need to know that you are not a tomato seller, you are a business owner, and the degree of respect you have for your accomplishments is the same amount of respect that prospective clients will give to you.

Respect and honor your craft and negotiate wisely. This respect will overflow to the kind of work that you deliver to your clients.

25 Ways to Make Money in Nigeria

Tried and Tested Ways, Different Types of Businesses to Run in Nigeria

I am so proud of Nigerian women, men, boys and girls.

Things are so tough in Nigeria right now and although many are living beneath the poverty line (very sad) many are also starting businesses and creatively creating impossibilities by taking crisis and changing it into opportunity and I am so proud of them.

This is the Nigeria of my dreams. We are changing lemons into lemonade - good tasting lemonade. It is a very needed drink with the dry and sunny weather in November and onward.

I am the one in the middle of two of my sisters, 2012, Lagos, Nigeria.

The story of my life

I spent most of my life before now as a baby girl. I only did the kind of jobs that made me happy and fulfilled me. I avoided some kind of jobs.

10 ways to make money online in Nigeria

Sisi Yemmie of Youtube or is it blogville
Sisi Yemmie of Youtube or is it blogville

I am using Sisi Yemmie as my first picture. Of all the bloggers I have known online she is someone who has inspired and encouraged me to make money via blogging. She was one of the first people to prove it was possible too. I simply blogged because I loved writing.

She on the other hand had been to the abroad where she saw it done and was convinced it could be done in Nigeria. So I followed her even in the days that she gave credit every monday to those who left comments on her Monday post. That was almost a decade ago.

The power of social selling: Meghan and Harry recently reopened their Linkedin Accounts

They are an amazing couple

Harry and Meghan are two of my most favourite people in the world.

They are indeed royalty.

How do they relate to social selling?

I will begin with a definition:

Social selling is the process of developing relationships as part of the sales process. Today this often takes place via social networks such as LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, and Pinterest, but can take place either online or offline

Getting leads from your social media platforms

Social Media is a place where you socialize still, it has ceased to be a place of fun. It is no longer fun but it has evolved into a land of opportunity. It is a place where you can generate clients.

These clients are known as leads in the world of social media.

About ten years ago, social media was about fun and games.
Facebook was about meeting up with old friends from secondary school, University and even training schools.

Scamming in the digital industry

Scamming is the bad news that goes hand in hand with the freedom that is freelancing.

Trust is a big issue in freelancing.

You can talk business, close the deal, write content calendars and content plans and get scammed by a business owner who is supposed to be doing business with you. The said business owner would act as if he has not just stolen intellectul property.

How do you avoid been scammed as a digital creator?

i. Collect a down payment:

Collect a 70% down payment before doing any work. The client may be afraid of getting scammed. You also are doubly afraid of getting scammed. One can't be wasting work resources doing free jobs.

ii. Work by referral or recommendation:

Let friends, family and clients refer new people to you. It is safer than swimming in shark infested waters on your own with no guarantee that the sharks will pay what they owe.

iii. Take the leap of faith:

Choose to trust. Building a clientele takes time and wisdom. Meeting that ideal client will be worth it even if you need to kiss nine frogs according to the proverb.

If you got scammed financially in Nigeria, see article to find out how to retrieve your money via the banks and CBN nigeria.
